fire police: learn how to not be a statistic

August 10, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The American highway is, by far, the most dangerous workplace in the country. When fire, EMS, police, tow truck operators and bystanders all gather at the scene of an accident, chaos ensues until the fire police regain control and make the situation more manageable. Traffic control at emergency scenes is paramount to the success of the overall operation, and it takes a trained individual to bring each emergency scene to a safe and successful end. This program will show how that is accomplished without bringing injury to those who put their lives on the line while assisting those in need. Irv Soden has been a certified fire police officer since 1992, when he was the chief of the Ouaquaga Fire Company and encouraged all his members to take the fire police course. Now, as captain of fire police for the Town of Binghamton Fire Company, it is his full-time assignment. This program will serve as a refresher for fire police officers, while those attending who are not involved in the fire police will learn something new. Be forewarned: the presenter is a retired teacher and there will be a quiz! Irving Soden

HANDS-ON: FLASHOVER TRAINING

NYS Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC)

It is said that if you’re more than five feet from the doorway, your chance of survival in a flashover is minimal. Working in this program, you’ll experience fire development from the incipient stage all the way to flashover. You’ll be able to identify the signs of the event before you’re part of the flashover. If you’ve never been in a flashover container, this program – staffed by America’s most seasoned instructors with years of experience teaching with a simulator – is a must. The program includes a classroom lecture, followed by intense live fire hands-on training evolutions in NYSAFC’s mobile flashover simulator.

Robert Fling has more than 25 years of experience in the fire service and currently is an ex-chief with the Dix Hills Fire Department on Long Island. He has written articles for many fire service publications and is a nationally recognized speaker. He is also a board member with Project Kill The Flashover and is the western Suffolk County advocate for the National Fallen Firefighter’s “Everyone Goes Home” program. He holds several fire service accreditations, is a New York state-certified Emergency Medical Technician, NFPA-1403 Live Fire Instructor, AHA CPR Instructor, and CEVO Instructor. Additionally, he is a member of the NFPA, Suffolk County Fire Chiefs Council, Town of Huntington Fire Chiefs Council, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and FASNY. Chief Fling was the recipient of the 2015 Firehouse Magazine Outstanding Leadership Award. He can be reached at robertdfling@gmail.com.
