Stay alive during a fire: Have an escape plan

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – “Fire doubles in size every 30 seconds,” said Jim Burns, President of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.

When you do the math – the only answer you really need to know is that it gets dangerous fast inside a home on fire.

“Some people think they have six to 10 minutes to get out of a burning building. Actually, in reality it’s probably less than two minutes,” said Burns.

That’s why firefighters say it’s important for families to have a fire escape plan to safely get out of their homes. In fact, Burns says one tried and true way to get out of your home isn’t enough. “Have 2 Ways Out” is actually the theme of national fire prevention month this month.

“Most importantly have a plan for the family where are they going to meet once they get out of the home. Also, go to the neighbors house to call 911. Don’t stop to do it in your own home. Get out of the house, and then notify 911 if you have a fire,” said Burns.

Burns says a good idea is to place a simple map of your home on the refrigerator. He says families should make sure to practice their fire escape plan several times a year.

“The minutes you can save when you actually have to exit – if you practice it in the early stages and do it on a regular basis so that it’s almost second nature to you, that can save your life,” said Burns.
