Free Tuition For Firefighting Students
Brighton, N.Y. – Community college students willing to work hard in classroom and the fire hall can attend school for free.
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is offering a tuition reimbursement program beginning this year. The Higher Education Learning Plan, or HELP, is the first of its kind statewide, according to FASNY.
Under the plan, students would have to maintain strong grades while volunteering during their time in community college and serve for up to four years after graduation.
“I think it’s a great opportunity twofold. The communities get a benefit of having volunteers here plus it’s a great opportunity for people to continue their schooling,” said Stephen MacAadam, Deputy Fire Chief of the Brighton Fire Department.
To receive the reimbursement, students must attend the closest community college within a 50-mile radius of their residence. October 1 is the deadline for the tuition reimbursement application for fall, February 1st is the spring deadline.
