FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK

FASNY has awarded 2017 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarships to Meghan Burns, of Auburn, and Hannah Roman, of Genoa. Both received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for their volunteer service in the community from Michael Caron, member of the FASNY Board of Directors.

Burns plans to attend Monroe Community College for two years and then transfer to another SUNY school to obtain a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in the hopes of becoming a New York State Trooper.

Burns was inspired to join the fire service by her family. Her father, Patrick Burns, is also a member of the Throop Fire Department, and is both a past chief and current assistant chief. Her uncle Chris Burns is a member of the Auburn Fire Department.

“The fire service has always been a big part of my family, and it definitely influenced me,” Burns said in a news release. “I’ve always wanted to be able to help others and really make a difference in my community.”

Outside of the fire department Burns is the president of the Italian Club at Auburn High School and vice president of the Model UN club. She is also involved with the school yearbook.

Roman will attend Cornell University in the fall, and is planning to major in international agriculture and rural development with a minor in crop management. She intends to participate in the Naval ROTC program at Cornell on a Marine Corps track, with the hope of becoming a commissioned officer. She aspires to go to flight school and pilot military helicopters. Once she completes her military career, Roman hopes to use her pilot’s license to operate medevac helicopters.

Outside of the fire department, Roman is a member of the National Honor Society, and served as the secretary. She also is active in the National FFA Organization, serving as chapter vice president as a junior and president this year. In addition to her community service, Roman participated in varsity track and cross country, and played on a high school interscholastic equestrian polo team through Cornell University.

The FASNY scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.
