Week In Review: Vests, Trump, fire safety, Matthew and soccer
This weekend feature offers a recap of the week’s top local stories:
MONDAY
The Daily Star did not publish because of the Columbus Day Holiday.
TUESDAY
Bulletproof vests purchased through a federal program are worn daily by Oneonta police officers on patrol, the lieutenant said Monday.
U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand on Friday announced that $808,198 was earmarked for New York state to buy 13,005 bulletproof vests for police officers across 192 jurisdictions, including law enforcement agencies in Otsego, Chenango, Delaware and Schoharie counties. The funds were allocated through the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance Bulletproof Vest Partnership.
In sports: Those listening to Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer coach Terri Adams yell at her players in the second half of a Tri-Valley League boys soccer semifinal on Saturday against Milford, would have never known which team heading toward a 2-0 victory and a league title game appearance.
WEDNESDAY
Area Republican candidates were asked their position Tuesday on party presidential nominee Donald Trump, in light of recently revealed vulgar comments about women he made in 2005.
Two state-level candidates stood behind the GOP nominee, but the candidate running for Congress did not.
In sports: Ted Mebust finished with two goals and an assist to lead the visiting Cooperstown boys soccer team to a Division II-clinching 5-0 victory over Dolgeville in the Center State Conference on Tuesday.
THURSDAY
Smoke alarms that last 10 years are being added to the arsenal of safety tools to alert residents to fires, officials said this week in promoting fire prevention.
Local fire departments are presenting activities and joining with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York to inform residents about fire prevention and safety measures, including the introduction of advanced smoke-detecting devices. Exit plans and fire extinguishers are among other safety tools to maintain, officials said.
In sports: If nothing else, Brandon Richards gave his team some momentum heading into the Section Four Class D Tournament.
Richards scored with five seconds remaining to lift the host third-seeded Morris boys soccer team past fourth-seeded Milford, 2-1, in the Tri-Valley League Tournament consolation game Wednesday.
FRIDAY
Death, damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew have been constants in the news during the past two weeks, but for at least four local people, the event hits much closer to home.
Three area individuals assisted with the emergency relief and cleanup efforts in Florida and North Carolina, officials said Thursday, and the family and friends of a SUNY Delhi student from Haiti have lost almost everything in the storm.
In sports: For the third consecutive year, the Delhi boys soccer team was one of two teams to make the Midstate Athletic Conference championship. The result this season was much different than the past two.
In a rematch of last year’s MAC title game, Delhi shut out host Greene, 2-0, the same score it lost last year’s championship.
