Volunteer Fire Departments Eager for More Volunteers

A statewide program called Recruit NY is aimed at increasing the number of volunteer firefighters. The program highlights the duties and rewards that accompany being a volunteer firefighter.

The Brockport Fire Department is hosting an open house Saturday for those who want to learn more about becoming an emergency responder.

Currently, the Brockport Fire Department is comprised of about 150 volunteers, 45 of which fight fires. The department responds to over 950 fire calls each year, and they need more volunteers.

Brian Smith has been a volunteer firefighter for two years. He went through the explorer program at the department as well.

“The camaraderie is definitely a huge thing, you come in not knowing anyone and everyone takes you under their wing and really helps you out,” explained Smith. “I get to go out and help people do something with the community and the whole family is involved in it. We are third generation, my brother and I.”

The open house at the Brockport Fire Department will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the firehouse located on Market Street.
