Student From Henrietta receives statewide scholarship award

A Rush-Henrietta senior was chosen as the winner of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Volunteer Scholarship.

Joseph Schutt was presented the scholarship award on Monday at the Rush Fire Station’s monthly meeting. Joseph received a certificate as well as a check for $1,000 for his volunteer service in the community. Joseph’s parents, brother and explorer advisor, Royer Pfersick were in attendance.

Joseph will graduate from Rush-Henrietta Senior High School and will attend Clarkson University. Joseph is a member of the Rush Fire Department Explorer Post #634. His community service Eagle Scout Project was to improve the physical environment for an organization that cares for injured birds of prey.

Joseph was one of 10 students chosen for this scholarship. A total of 130 students throughout the state applied for this scholarship, which was the highest number ever submitted in the history of this award.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community (e.g., community projects, fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention projects, 4-H, etc.) and the proof of his or her character (e.g., community citizenship, dependability, etc.)
