STUDENT FROM HALF HOLLOW HILLS HIGH SCHOOL WEST IN SUFFOLK COUNTY CHOSEN AS A WINNER OF FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK VOLUNTEER SCHOLARSHIP

On behalf of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), FASNY Scholarship Awards Committee Chairman Daniel McNeil and Scholarship Advisory Committee Chairman Brian F. McQueen have announced the name of a local recipient of the FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship – Michael A. Kaufman of Dix Hills, NY. On June 7, FASNY Second Vice President Robert McConville presented the award to Michael at Half Hollow Hills High School West. Michael received a certificate as well as a check for $1,000 for his volunteer service in the community.

Kaufman graduated from Half Hollow Hills High School West in Suffolk County and will attend Binghamton University. Michael is an active member of the Dix Hills Fire Department. He is also a Mentor Manager of the Challenger Program, a community run basketball program for children with special needs, K-12.

Michael was one of 10 students chosen for this scholarship. A total of 130 students throughout the state applied for this scholarship, which was the highest number ever submitted in the history of this award.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community (e.g., community projects, fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention projects, 4-H, etc.) and the proof of his or her character (e.g.,
community citizenship, dependability, etc.)
