BARK IN THE PARK — The Bark in the Park organizing committee is currently looking for vendors and sponsors for what is shaping up to be Western New York’s premier pet event.
The pet gathering is slated from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 27, in Clarence Town Park. The event marks the only day of the year in which dogs are allowed in Town Park.
In return for a $5 donation per person, with a cap of $10 per family, participants will receive a “goodie bag,” packed with valuable pet items. They will also receive a “puppy passport” that will be used for a scavenger hunt.
Participants will travel throughout the park visiting various vendors and obtaining stamps. The completed passport entitles guests to additional door prize opportunities.
Those interested in joining the organizing committee for Bark in the Park 2017 should contact Tim Pazda at 984-3245.
‘SPRING IT ON’ — Approximately 1,870 local donors opened their wallets and gave more than $135,501 to 155 nonprofits participating in “Spring It On,” a 24-hour online fundraising event powered by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County.
The campaign, which ran March 14 and 15, beat last year’s total of $132,000.
Despite strong results, many nonprofits were hampered in their promotion efforts by Winter Storm Stella. In response, the United Way will extend the opportunity to continue to donate to “Spring It On” until the end of the month to allow nonprofits to collect the donations they may have received if the weather had been more favorable.
VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTING — More than 200 fire departments across New York State have signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.
On April 29 and 30, firehouses across the state will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service.
Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear.
RecruitNY, which was established in 2011, is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York and the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, among other groups.
For area residents looking to find if a particular fire department is participating in RecruitNY, visit the website www.recruitny.org/participation-area/.
