Smoke Detector Giveaway, for a few words

Essay contest has detectors as prizes

Firefighters have an extra suggestion as we end Daylight Saving Time:  in addition to setting your clocks back, take a minute to change the batteries in your lifesaving devices, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

On Weekend Today in Central NY on Saturday morning,  Assistant Chief Rick Nemier, from the Nedrow Fire Department, showed off a badly melted detector that was still able to sound in a fire, and save a life. He pointed out that this past week, a woman died in a Syracuse fire, in a home with no working detectors.

To encourage detector use, FASNY (Firemen’s Association of the State of NY) is doing a free detector giveaway through the Onondaga Couny Firemen’s Association (OCVFA).  Here is how to enter:
~Write an essay, 100 words or less, on why you feel you should receive a free detector.
~Deadline for submission is November 24, 2014
~The ‘prize’ is a ‘Worry Free’ 10 year detector from Kidde Fire Safety Products.

~Mail your entry to:  OCVFA Detector Contest
                                   PO Box 345
                                   Syracuse, NY   13209

Winners will be announced Thanksgiving week.

Win or not, be sure to put fresh batteries in your detectors this weekend.
