Sanborn man re-elected to state Fireman’s Home board
David F. Schmidt of Sanborn was recently re-elected to the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Firemen’s Home Board of Trustees and is now serving as board president.
Fireman’s Home is a specialized rehabilitation facility for retired volunteer firefighters in Hudson.
Schmidt was unanimously chosen and will serve a 5-year term as a trustee.
Schmidt has a long fire service career spanning more than four decades. He began his fire service career as a junior firefighter in 1971 when he was just 14 years old. On his 18th birthday, he was sworn in as an active firefighter with Lewiston Fire Company No. 2. One year later, he was appointed a junior lieutenant and has served in the line offices of senior lieutenant, 1st and 2nd assistant chief, and served as chief in 1980. He also served as president in 1983.
He is currently president of the Exempt and Benevolent Association and has served in this capacity since 1992. He has also served with the Sanborn Fire Company for six years and was first aid captain.
Schmidt has been a member of the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen’s Association where he served as Sergeant at Arms from 1991 to 1995. He served as president in 1999.
Schmidt has been a member of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association since 1975. He was a trustee representing Niagara County from 2002-2007. He is currently a member of the Two Percent Committee.
