NY Mills resident elected a trustee of FASNY Firemen’s Home.
David F. Schmidt of Sanborn has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) Firemen’s Home, a specialized rehabilitation facility for retired volunteer firefighters in Hudson.
Schmidt was unanimously chosen at FASNY’s 139th Annual Convention at the Edgewood Resort in Alexandria Bay in the Thousand Islands on Aug. 19. He will serve a 5-year term as a trustee.
Schmidt began his fire service career as a Junior Firefighter in 1971. On his 18th birthday in 1975, he became an active firefighter with Lewiston Fire Company No. 2. One year later, he was appointed a Junior Lieutenant and has served in the line offices of Senior Lieutenant, 1st and 2nd Assistant Chief, and served as Chief in 1980. He also served as President in 1983 in addition to the positions of Secretary, Financial Secretary and Sgt. at Arms.
He is currently President of the Exempt and Benevolent Association and has served in this capacity since 1992. He has also served with the Sanborn Fire Company for 6 years and was First Aid Captain.
Schmidt has been a member of the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen’s Association where he served as Sgt. At Arms from 1991 to 1995. He was elected 3rd VP, 2nd VP, 1st VP and served as president in 1999. During this time, he received tax exempt status for the association. Schmidt was elected to the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Convention Committee in 2001. He was elected Treasurer in 2004 and has served as Secretary since 2005. He was also Housing Chairman for the FASNY conventions in Niagara Falls in 1998 and 2009.
Schmidt has been a member of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association since 1975. He was a Trustee representing Niagara County from 2002-2007. He is currently a member of the Fire Prevention and 2 percent Committees and is Vice Chairman of the Steering Committee.
He also holds several Master Electrician licenses. He and his wife Francine have been married since 1982 and have two daughters Julie and Karyn.
