News in brief: Armonk’s Gagliardi wins fire scholarship
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship was awarded to Michael Gagliardi of Armonk. Gagliardi received a certificate as well as a check for $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community.
Gagliardi graduated from Byram Hills High School and will attend Union College in the fall. He joined the firehouse because three other members of his family work at the local fire department, and saw it as a good way to help his community.
Gagliardi was one of 15 students chosen for this scholarship. A total of 130 students throughout the state applied for this scholarship, which was the highest number ever submitted in the history of this award.
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community (community projects, fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention projects, 4-H, etc.) and the proof of his or her character (community citizenship, dependability, etc.).
