New FASNY Youth Group of the Year Award and Text Campaign Winners

The FASNY Youth in the Fire Service Committee is proud to announce the start of a brand new yearly award for the FASNY Youth Group of the Year. Much like the Firefighter of the Year and EMS Provider of the Year awards, this award, which will be given yearly starting in 2012, will recognize the outstanding youth fire organization that exemplifies commitment to their fire department and community. The criteria that will be used to select an honoree includes that the group be an established youth fire organization that has demonstrated leadership within their department and community through fire service related projects or community service. They must exhibit honor, teamwork and dedication to the fire service. A chief or advisor can nominate a group. Applications for this award can be downloaded from www.fasny.com/youth and must be postmarked by March 1st, 2012 for consideration.

In other news, the Youth in the Fire Service Committee’s first ever texting campaign was a tremendous success. The concept of the campaign was to engage our youth fire service organization members to become more actively involved in FASNY. Three prizes were awarded: an IPod Touch for first place, a flip video camera for second and a FASNY jacket for third. It is important to note that all of the winners entered the contest while attending a FASNY sponsored youth event or other junior or Explorer event. We are proud to announce our winners for this year’s campaign: First place went to Elizabeth “Lizzy” Spencer of the Wantagh Fire Department, Nassau County; second place went to Michelle Magee of the Fairville Fire Department, Wayne County; and third place went to Alan Coughlin of the Frontier Fire Department, Niagara County.

2012 FASNY Convention to be held on August 16th, 2012 at the Syracuse Fire Department Training Academy.
