MVCC and FASNY team up for tuition reimbursement program
UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) – The number of volunteer firefighters in the Mohawk Valley is on the decline, and now a new tuition reimbursement program is hoping to reverse the pattern.
Mohawk Valley Community College and the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York is teaming up to fund up to 100 percent of tuition for volunteer firefighters in hopes of encouraging higher education and volunteering in the community.
“So, what we are attempting to do is increase the volunteers by 15,000 and pay for tuition for 2,000,” said FASNY President David Jacobowitz.
If a volunteer firefighter attends community college within a 50 mile radius of their home, 100% of their tuition will be reimbursed if they earn a 4.0 in their classes.
If they earn 3.0, 85% will be reimbursed and a 2.5 GPA will earn 75% reimbursement.
The deadline to sign up for the program for the fall 2011 semester is October 1.
