In Memoriam: FASNY Secretary Michael D. Whelan (1946 – 2014)

MichaelD.WhelanFASNY Secretary Michael D. Whelan, 68, of Marcellus passed away Thursday, December 18, at the Francis House.  Michael fought courageously and gracefully against pancreatic cancer for more than two years.

Michael became FASNY secretary in 1998 and served as chair of the FASNY Media and Communications Committee. He also served as a member of the bylaw and convention committees over the years.

A past first vice president of the Central New York Firemen’s Association, Michael joined the Fairmont Volunteer Fire Department in 1989.

Michael was a 1964 graduate of St. Lucy’s Academy and attended the University of Notre Dame before studying at the Simmons Institute of Funeral Service. He co-owned and operated Whelan Bros. Funeral Home from 1978 until 2005, the third generation of the Whelan family to do so.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, John D. Whelan and Mary Nicholson Whelan. His spouse, Anne McCarthy Whelan, died in 2012. He is survived by several cousins.

Calling hours will be Sunday, December 21, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Whelan Brothers and Hulchanski Funeral Home, 5854 Belle Isle Road, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 22, at St. Lucy’s Church, 432 Gifford Street, Syracuse. A reception will follow church services across the street at the St. Lucy’s Church gymnasium.
