WHITESBORO, N.Y. (WKTV) – Teaching fire safety comes as second nature to one teacher at Westmoreland Road Elementary in Whitesboro, who was named “teacher of the year” by the Fireman’s Association of the State of New York.

Paula Candella says she is excited, but humble about the honor. She says she’s just passing along what she knows about fire safety, having grown up with a father and a brother who are firefighters and being married to a firefighter.

Candella’s creative fire safety lessons have become a staple in her classroom just like math and science. She is not the first teacher from the school to win the award, as one of Westmoreland Road Elementary School’s teachers won the FASNY award in 2006.
