FASNY Past President (2008-2010) Thomas (Tom) Cuff, 86, of Levittown passed away on April 22, 2018.
Tom was elected FASNY President in 2008 and remained active with FASNY long after his tenure ended. In 2017, in recognition of his distinguished career and advocacy for better fire safety standards and Line of Duty Death benefits, he received the FASNY Fire Service Community Achievement Award.
In addition to his work on behalf of FASNY, Tom served as President the Southern New York Volunteer Firemen’s Association, the Nassau County Fire Districts Association, the Nassau County Firemen’s Association and the South Shore Fire Departments Association. He joined the Garden City Fire Department in 1953 and the Levittown Fire Department in 1961.
During his career, Tom worked tirelessly to ensure that smoke detectors became requirements in all homes. He led a national codes and standards group that sought to improve emergency exit routes in hotels.
He believed passionately in the importance of community-based influence over local volunteer fire services. We celebrate his life’s dedication to ensuring the safety of the public and the firefighters who faithfully respond to the call of duty.
For over three decades, he helped families of deceased firefighters successfully navigate the daunting federal procedures to ensure that they received the death benefit following the loss of their firefighter.
He is survived by his wife Jane, his four daughters and 10 grandchildren. The Cuff family asks that donations be made to the FASNY Firemen’s Home in Tom’s name.
