Horanburg to receive statewide honor
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — After nearly 50 years of serving the Newfane community as a
volunteer firefighter, Newfane resident and Miller Hose Fire Company member Marty Horanburg is receiving statewide recognition for his service on Sunday.
Horanburg, 76, is receiving the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Fire Service Community Achievement Award during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Miller Hose Fire Company picnic ground, 6161 McKee St. Horanburg’s family will be on-hand Sunday to see him get the award.
“I feel quite honored,” he said, adding that he was surprised when he found out he was getting the
award. “It’s something I’ll treasure.”
Horanburg has held several different positions in the fire department, including second assistant chief,
assistant chief, fire chief, assistant treasurer and vice president.
He was also named Miller Hose firefighter of the year in 1981. While he no longer holds an office, he is
still active in organizational and fundraising committees within the department.
Along with his membership with the fire company, Horanburg works full-time and is involved with
several other efforts in the Newfane Community. He currently sits on Eastern Niagara Hospital Board of Directors, is a member of the Town of Newfane Business Association, the Newfane Sports BoosterClub and is known as the “Voice of Newfane,” in his role as the volunteer announcer for all Newfane High School basketball and football games. He is also a member of the Lions Club and volunteers weekly at the Olcott Beach Carousel Park.
“You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who dedicates themselves as much as Marty to their
community. He is a true inspiration and the definition of volunteer,” said FASNY President James Burns. “I can’t think of a better representative of FASNY and a more deserving candidate for this award.”
