Firefighters Urge Fireworks Caution
Firefighters are urging residents use caution with newly legalized fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July.
New York passed legislation legalizing sparklers and some ground fireworks in 2014. It took effect earlier this year in counties that approved the measure.
“We don’t condone the use even if they are legal. Even sparklers burn at 1,800 degrees and can do significant harm to people and children especially,” said John D’Alessandro with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York.
The concern for fireworks goes beyond injuries. Firefighters are also reminding residents to properly store unused fireworks.
“We’ve stressed to other fire departments to be more aware. This is yet another hazard we have to pick up on when we do the size up of a building,” said D’Alessandro. “We would urge people to go see the great displays that are put on by the professionals in the Capital District and not try to recreate those themselves. For a few minutes of fun there could be a lot of months, if not years of unhappiness. If you are inclined to use fireworks that are now legal in the state of New York, please take every precaution. Supervise the children, dispose of them properly and if you’re an individual who purchased them for resale, store them properly.”
