Firefighters, Lawmakers to Meet Saturday to Discuss Legislation
DEERFIELD — Local firefighters and politicians will be meeting Saturday to discuss upcoming legislation in New York, including getting cancer coverage for volunteer firefighters.
U.S. Congressman Richard Hanna, R-22, Barneveld, State Senator Joseph Griffo, R-47, Rome, State Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, D-119, Utica, State Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney, R-101, New Hartford, and County Executive Anthony Picente will all be in attendance at the meeting, which will be hosted by the Deerfield Fire Department on Trenton Road.
The North Legislative Outreach Session will involve discussions on presumptive cancer coverage, social media in the fire service and adding sprinklers to the building codes.
Firefighters are diagnosed with cancer at a much higher rate than the general public, the officials said. The session will run from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., with breakfast included.
The Firemens’ Association of the State of New York will also be in attendance.
