Firefighter Garrett Loomis honored in Albany ceremony

Garrett W. Loomis, the Sackets Harbor volunteer firefighter who died at a fire scene April 11, 2010, was memorialized Tuesday at a ceremony in Albany.

His name is now among 2,366 inscribed on the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

Each year during National Fire Prevention Week, representatives of fire service organizations throughout New York state gather at the memorial to remember firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Mr. Loomis, who was an assistant chief of the Sackets Harbor fire company, was killed when a silo at North Harbor Dairy, County Route 75, Sackets Harbor, exploded while he was climbing a ladder on the structure.

His death occurred 10 days shy of his 27th birthday.

He was a professional firefighter, employed at Fort Drum. A new fire station at Fort Drum was dedicated July 26 in his name.
