FASNY issues reminder, tips about fireworks safety
The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York issued a reminder Tuesday about the dangers of fireworks.
Consumer fireworks injure thousands of people each year and result in hundreds of structure fires. Even sparklers, often thought of as a safer alternative, can get hot enough to cause third-degree burns on contact, a news release stated.
In addition to reminding residents that it’s illegal for anyone other than a licensed professional to own or use fireworks in New York state, FASNY offered these tips for safely enjoying professional displays on the Fourth of July:
- Only view fireworks displays by trained professionals
- Respect any and all public safety barriers set up around the launch site
- Remember that the best views are often from a quarter-mile or more away
- Leave pets home, the loud noise can scare them and/or damage their hearing
- Do not purchase or set off fireworks on your own. It is illegal and could harm you or those around you.
- Do not pick up or attempt to re-light used fireworks. They may still be active.
