Enhancement to Move Over Law Takes Effect
ALBANY – Legislation to require that more vehicles move over when they approach an emergency situation on roadways.
The measure, introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston) requires drivers to exercise caution by moving over to the adjacent lane or slowing down when approaching or passing any emergency vehicle with one or more blue, combination blue and red or combination blue, red and white lights while assisting a motorist on all state roadways.
The late takes effect immediately.
Cahill said the new addition to the law will protect more lives of emergency responders.
“Every single emergency responder, every single person helping someone in need on the side of the road, deserves respect and most of all, protection for their safety,” he said.
James Burns, president of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York said working on an active road is dangerous, with vehicular accidents representing the number two killer of firefighters in the country. The new additions to the move over law “will further increase the safety of our first responders when operating on highways.”
