Deadline extended for tuition program
Volunteer firefighters in Nassau and Suffolk counties have until Feb. 20 to apply for a state tuition reimbursement program for community college.
The deadline for applying for the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s Higher Education Learning Plan for the current semester has been extended.
This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared toward recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters.
Under the program, an individual who hasn’t earned a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100 percent tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of the state’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses the student-volunteer firefighters can pursue, and they can enroll on a full-time or part-time basis.
Online courses taken through Empire State College are also included.
