Check batteries in smoke, carbon monoxide detectors when changing clocks
(WKTV) – Daylight saving time ends Sunday, and while that means an extra hour of sleep, it’s also a good time to check your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The Fireman’s Association of the State of New York wants to remind residents to check your life-saving devices. Officials say 2/3 of all fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or nonworking smoke alarms. Since 1975, alarms have gotten more advanced yearly.
“Things are changing all the time, but the big thing is, you need to leave batteries in the smoke detectors,” said David Jacobwitz, past president of FASNY. “A lot of times, you take them out because of false alarm, or a kid needs a nine-volt battery for their radio or remote control. We need to make sure they’re workable and that they work all the time.”
Smoke detectors should be on every level of your home and in or near every sleeping area.
