A racing team is partnering with FASNY to promote the volunteer fire service at the track. In addition to including the FASNY brand on its dirt modified cars, MCR Motorsports features a driver who is also a volunteer firefighter.

“We know the importance of recruitment and retention in the volunteer fire service,” says Jeremy Connors with MCR Motorsports, who is also a Past Chief of Halfmoon Fire Department in Waterford. “We discussed how we could hit that demographic and encourage them to join the volunteer fire service.”

The semi-pro team that includes Connors’ son, Thomas D’Angelo, races at least weekly in the DIRTCar Series from April to October, covering New York State and reaching into the Northeast. The races draw up to 10,000 fans.

D’Angelo is a member of the West Crescent Fire Department. MCR Motorsports was started by chance. Connors and D’Angelo were big fans of the sport. When D’Angelo gave it a try himself, he was pretty successful. Eventually, they would join forces with a friend and seasoned driver to form MCR in 2019.

MCR Motorsports had an excellent 2020 with 23c driver D’Angelo finishing eighth in points for the Limited Sportsman in his rookie year.

“It’s something that I wanted to do with my son, that was the biggest thing,” Connors said. “I wanted to not only showcase his talents, but also showcase the fact that he can do this and work full-time and give back to the community.”
