FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson donated items to family on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" on Nov. 16

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York’s Museum of Firefighting helped a family’s dream come true on an episode of ABC’s hit show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” which aired on Sunday, November 16 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm, EST, by donating items to furnish a new children’s bedroom.  Aaron Frisch, a firefighter and paramedic, and his wife Jackie, who live in Toledo, Ohio, are raising three biological sons and eight adopted children.

Sadly, Jackie is suffering from a soft tissue disease called Ehrlers-Danlos Syndrome, which has no cure.  She underwent catheter heart surgery because of her disease and had a series of strokes that left part of her body paralyzed.  Doctors say her condition could even lead to a possible fatal relapse.  Meanwhile, all 13 members of the Frisch family lived in a cramped, one-story ranch style home without air conditioning and windows, and the doors were in need of many repairs.

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” Team Leader Ty Pennington, along with his designers, saved the Frisches from their deteriorating home and gave it a total makeover.  Among some of the volunteers who lent a hand was the FASNY Museum of Firefighting in Hudson, NY, which donated firefighting-themed tin signs, truck models, posters and a firefighting-themed lamp – all to create a fun firefighting bedroom for the children.

“The FASNY Museum of Firefighting not only seeks to preserve the history of the American firefighting, but also seeks to inspire the next generation of young men to consider this proud vocation. So, when the producers approached me about donating items to create a firefighting- themed room for these boys, I thought this was a logical extension of the Museum’s mission. This donation also exemplified one of the basic tenets of the fire service: giving back to the community,” said Jamie Smith, director of FASNY Museum of Firefighting.

The FASNY Museum of Firefighting is located at 117 Harry Howard Avenue in Hudson, and houses the premiere collection of firefighting objects and apparatus in the world.  It uses its uniquely American collection to create such exhibitions as Then, Now and Always: Firefighting From the Cradle of Rome Through the 1900’s and A Home Away From Home: a Pictorial History of the Firemen’s Home, both of which are current exhibitions at the Museum, as well as Lest We Forget: Honoring the Memory of the Firefighters of September 11, 2001.
